As a Money Mindset Mentor, I get to speak to lots of different people about their financial situations, both individually and as groups. Something I often hear is, ‘I don’t normally talk about this stuff!’
Many of us have been conditioned to keep quiet about money. Our finances tend to be private and even within couples, there can be secrecy in this area.
When we don’t talk about a particular issue, it can lead to shame, confusion, fear and anxiety. It’s no wonder money can be such a thorny subject when we spend most of the time keeping it all hidden away!
Over the past year I’ve learned to be much more open about money.
I make time to talk to my husband about our finances and take an active role in managing them and creating joint goals.
I’m more comfortable talking about money in the different groups I’m a member of, both online and offline.
I also meet with a friend once a fortnight to talk about all things money. We call this our ‘Power Pow Wow!’ We set goals, discuss challenges and work on our wealth consciousness.
These Pow Wows are non-negotiable. We meet every fortnight, regardless of what is going on for either of us. This is sacred space for us to share support and create abundance.
If you do just one thing to improve the way you feel about money and boost your income, I recommend talking about your finances more. Here are some different ways for you to do this:
- If you have a partner, commit to being more open about your finances. Make time to set joint money goals, review your savings and expenses, and take equal responsibility for your financial decisions.
- Get together with a friend who can be your ‘money buddy’. This will be someone you can share any challenges with, work towards financial goals and celebrate your successes.
- Start a money book club. There are so many books out there on money mindset, wealth consciousness and financial planning. Get together with a group of friends and pick one book each month for you all to read. You can then share your insights and any action you plan to take based on the book.
- Create your own Power Pow Wow group. Arrange to meet up regularly with a group of friends or acquaintances purely to focus on money. This will be powerful space for you to give and receive support, share your feelings about money and plan how to move forward.
Take action now: Which one of the above resonates with you most? Commit to at least one way of being more open about money. Start the conversation today!
